From Dr. Deefield

The career path I chose is based on deep seated values of patient care grounded in osteopathic holistic principles. I originally went into family practice to get a good grounding in medicine, but it was not long before I recognized Psychiatry as my true passion. Then in order to serve patients holistically I sought out addiction medicine.

I completed some of my training in New Jersey and had the good fortune thereafter to own a private practice for over 20 years. This allowed me the flexibility to work at other facilities in other venues which greatly expanded my clinical expertise.

One Example of this is my work in addiction medicine. I started out as a provider in MAT then a consultant and progressed to medical directorship that included detox and residential facilities. I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing the start-up of several facilities and the work and planning that goes into that. Consultant work has included such work as governmental agencies like probation, parole, and other forensic entities. I have also done IMEs for the Board of Nursing and Medicine. Collaborative work has always been my favorite, and I have enjoyed serving as a mentor especially in underserved areas.

I love being a part of the medical community, in general. I have always enjoyed working with my peers and learning about their subspecialties. I truly see psychiatry as the intersection of all aspects of medicine. I look to the future of psychiatry and enjoy such things as quantum neuropsychiatry and the frontiers of addiction medicine.

I’m well-versed in the field of mental illness and passionate about the work I do for my patients. My over two decades of extensive practice in various psychiatric settings have afforded me the clinical experience and expertise to treat and manage patients with mental health and co-occurring disorders. I started my career as an ER psychiatric screener, evaluating and triaging patients in crisis and referring them to the appropriate levels of care for stabilization. From there, I transitioned to an inpatient psychiatric unit as a Psychiatric Behavior Specialist, working on a specialized unit for the dual-diagnosed. I continued working in the inpatient unit for over a  decade, treating and managing patients with Bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorders, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, developmental disabilities, Borderline personality, PTSD, substance abuse disorders, and more.  I have worked in inpatient units at Community hospitals, Intermediate, and long-term State and Federal psychiatric facilities. My patient population includes adolescents, teenagers, adults, and geriatrics. At various inpatient psychiatric facilities, I have had the honor of serving as the psychiatric nurse educator, training and certifying all clinical staff in the assessment and development of appropriate strategies and interventions for preventing and managing patients with Disruptive Behaviors (PMDB).

In the last decade, I shifted my focus to working in outpatient clinical settings, doing what I love best, treating clients with mental health disorders and substance abuse. I incorporate evidence-based treatment in my clinical practice. I treat and monitor patients with substance abuse with FDA-approved medications (MAT) such as Suboxone, Vivitrol injections, and Naltrexone. I administer long-acting psychotropics (LAI) to clients with mental health disorders to suit the client’s preferences, promote their psychiatric wellbeing, and stability.  I provide brief psychotherapy utilizing Cognitive Behavior Treatment (CBT) approaches, education, and medication management with each session because I believe that an educated patient is an empowered patient.
